1) I know that the creators of Google are rich! No really; it's a great site that allows you to search and find. I actually use Yahoo! more.

2) I'm hoping to dig more into Google today to discover tools that are available beyond just searching. What are the benefits of being an "authorized" user?

I know that google is a search engine that will help you locate websites and images. I know that there are free things for teachers with the google suite, but I am not sure what they are.

Today I am hoping to learn what the tools are within the google suite and how I can make use of them in my classroom.

1. Know about Google: use to find many sites about a given subject I am looking for; find images; connect with blogspot; gmail.
2. Hoping to learn about Google today: how to find "safe" sites for students; how to use Google in the classroom in an efficient way.

I only know about search and that Belinda says "google rocks". I'm looking forward to finding what rocks and tools that can make my life easier.

Google is the most popular search engine. Google has expanded beyond being a simple search engine only. It provides email, maps & other portal services. Microsoft considers Google one of its bigger threats.
What I would like to learn about Google - an update on all their services. Their online office suite would not only be useful but could be a major paradigm shift.

I use Googlechat, a lot of email, and phone for keeping in toch with family and friends.

I've emailed word documents for proofreading, and had people add suggestions using red text or an editing feature that let me "accept changes."

I don't use technology much to collaborate, except for reply-all email discussions about something a bunch of people are planning, for example.

I am working with my students to create multimedia presentations for literary movements. They will have access to the images, maps, book exerpts, etc., to add to their presentations--a safe source to find info. I hope our school does not have this Google info. blocked.

I use email to contact coworkers, family, friends, and on-line services. In adddition, I also communicate with district level administrators as needed. Students - present and past - can communicate with me.

The biggest challenges I have encountered are the problems with the district's system. There are not enough computers for students, some students do not have computers at home so they cannot send in documents, some are using outdated word programs that the school can't open, and the biggest issue is the lack of equipment/training available. The district wants us to use projectors through our computers, but don't provide the training. I guess we are expected to learn through osmosis. The district does not maintain the equipment - I had to buy the splitter for the projector. The district wants us to go paperless but does not provide the support we need.

Rant #2

At my school it seems that technology is mainly e-mail among staff, although my principal has not added me to his list of teachers so I do not get any of his e-mails (which can be conveinent at times... snicker snicker). When I find neat links I pass them along to the other teachers via e-mail.

Technology is not used to contact my families, very few of them have computers or internet access.

My students use of technology at the moment is limited to taking AR quizzes. All of our new computers and most of the computers in the lab are not not hooked up yet. We are being promised that this problem will be solved over our winter break.

Email isn't always the best form of communication, whether with colleagues or not. Face-to-face is a sure bet, I think. I like to send quick messages, but I often end up asking the person when I see them, "Did you get my email?" There are a lot of negatives - tons of junk filling up your account, causing you to jump over the important stuff; messages that get misunderstood. Email is a good option, but in-person communication seems safer.

Besides email we use Schoolloop - which is a suite providing grading, course postings, chat and school community email. With Schoolloop, parents and students have their own userid/logon. Teachers are able to see all students' grades. Students can't post email anonymously.
